Feature|Sirāt x Kangding Ray When Electronic Beats Become the Ultimate Doomsday Faith: The Extreme Sonic Experience of Cannes-Winning Sirāt

"This isn't meant to be listened to; it's meant to be danced to."

Directed by Spanish filmmaker Óliver Laxe, Sirāt caused a massive stir following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Not only did it take home the Jury Prize, but it also swept multiple accolades, including "Best Original Score" and "Best Sound Design."

From Experimental Electronica to Apocalyptic Soundscapes.

Sirāt tapped French experimental electronic maestro Kangding Ray to craft its score. If you're familiar with the sonic aesthetics of Raster-Noton or Stroboscopic Artefacts, you can already imagine those cold, precise, yet organically dynamic techno beats.

In Sirāt, music is the very soul of the film. Set on the eve of World War III, the story follows a father and son journeying deep into the Moroccan desert to find their daughter, who vanished at a rave. As they venture deeper, Kangding Ray's score gradually evolves from fractured pulses into hypnotic, minimalist sub-bass.

▍Sound Design

Pushing Cinema Audio Systems to Their Limits.

Its Oscar nomination for Best Sound Design is no fluke. Early in the film, the scene where a massive speaker rig is set up in the desert delivers a physical reverberation that pierces through the screen and straight into your soul. The director's words read like a mantra: "Sirāt is a spiritual path, guiding you to experience death before you truly die."
As the destination becomes increasingly obscured, all we can do is follow the beat and keep moving forward.
