The Free Soul of Jazz is not Jazz — Kim Oki

Kim Oki, from South Korea, is one of the representative figures of Asian avant-garde jazz, not only a crescendo performer, composer, and film director, but also a street dancer and a creator who spans various media.

Although he never had any formal academic music training , his distinctive style quickly gained attention and became popular after the release of his debut album, Cherubim's Wrath, in 2013.

Yet, with a rebellious yet free soul, he detested being labeled as a jazz musician and even more bluntly stated in early interviews:

"I don't think my music is jazz."
(내 음악이 재즈라고 생각하지 않는다)

During the interview, he mentioned that while he first got exposed to saxophone due to accidentally listening to Miles Davis's music, he had never formally studied traditional jazz. His focus was more on black music and hip-hop culture from his youth.

Indeed, his works vary greatly in style, spanning avant-garde jazz, spiritual jazz, post-ambient music, hip-hop, and R&B, making them difficult to define within a framework.
In last year's release of "2025 Hip Hop Retreat," he blended jazz with rap and collaborated with popular rappers such as Wonstein and Omega Sapien, creating a refreshing work that left everyone amazed.

At last year's Freespace Jazz Festival, I saw his live performance for the first time, Kim performed "Cotard's Syndrome," which I adore very much.
Expressing the fierce and beautiful melody of generations biting each other in civilized society, we all transform into cold-blood beasts, floating together in this cold forest of cement.
Kim Oki is exceptionally skilled at creating a cinematic urban atmosphere with a touch of melancholy and loneliness, and frequently uses music to question various issues in society and life.
Listening to his music makes one think even more deeply,
What is the essence of jazz? What kind of jazz are you pursuing?

Next Tuesday, Kim Oki will return to the West Kowloon Cultural District as part of his tour, featuring the beautiful and dreamlike lead singer Lee Ara, performance will be 90 minutes!
The warm-up performance features contemporary jazz with post rock elements from Nelson Fung & The Water!
We sincerely invite you to join us on a unique musical space created by Kim Oki on June 30th. See you at West Kowloon!
