Music This Week|gyrofield's debut, CHANKA's new-song show and GOLD's records exhibition

▍gyrofield releases debut album Great Jobs on Field Research

Hong Kong-born, Netherlands-based producer gyrofield released their debut album, Great Jobs, on 21 October. Its ten tracks form the second release on their own Field Research label, following May's Your Fight EP.

Working as gyrofield, Kiana Li previously released music through labels including XL Recordings, Metalheadz and Kapsela. The new album places release decisions within their own imprint while turning from the inward emotional focus of earlier work towards personality, impulses and dissatisfaction with the world outside. In the artist's account of its making, post-punk and soundsystem music provide starting points for reassembling their influences. Dub and post-industrial references sit within an approach that uses unusual time signatures, patterns and structures to address identity and resistance.

The sequence opens with "Birdsong", closes with "Ende" and includes the previously shared "Great Jobs (Don't Wanna)". The complete digital album is now available through gyrofield's official Bandcamp page.

▍Tickets go on sale for Son Lux's first Hong Kong headline show

Son Lux will play their first Hong Kong headline show at MOM Livehouse in North Point on 16 January 2027, starting at 8pm. Tickets went on public sale this week, priced at HK$390. Promoter Clockenflap says the trio will bring music from Out Into, released in September, to Hong Kong.

Originally Ryan Lott's solo project, Son Lux developed into a band with guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang. Their work spans alternative songwriting, electronic production and film scores, including Everything Everywhere All at Once and Thunderbolts*. The former earned them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

Out Into provides the recent recorded context for the date. The band also developed its song "Out Into Us" into a sound and video installation with director Alex Cook. The Hong Kong announcement is for a band headline show. Tickets are sold through Ticketflap.

▍CHANKA brings two years of new songs to MIGHT DELETE LATER

Hong Kong singer-songwriter and producer CHANKA will present MIGHT DELETE LATER at Chamame Livehouse in Ngau Tau Kok on 25 November at 8pm. The show brings together songs written over the past two years and asks listeners to respond before their future is settled: which should be released, and which might be deleted?

Working across ambient pop, electronic music and folk, CHANKA frames the show as a fresh start after procrastination and self-doubt. Advance GA and VIP tickets include a private listening link, giving audiences a chance to hear new material before the performance. The title invites a response to work still in progress, leaving its eventual release open.

▍GOLD opens records, pairing Asian experimental recordings with We Buy White Albums

Serakai Studio's records opened at GOLD in Wong Chuk Hang on 24 October and runs until 19 December. Organised as two sides of a record, the exhibition pairs a listening collection of Asian experimental music with the late artist Rutherford Chang's We Buy White Albums (2006–2025).

Side A, Experimental Sound: Asia, brings together more than 250 vinyl records, CDs and cassettes selected by artists, musicians, DJs and researchers from Hong Kong, Tokyo and Bangkok. Contributors include Nerve, Alex Yiu and Kyoka. Focusing mainly on recordings made before the 2010s, it offers three listening stations where visitors can choose and play works, moving between minimal music, noise and other experimental forms.

Side B presents the thousands of first-pressing copies of The Beatles' self-titled 1968 album that Chang collected over almost twenty years. Drawings, dedications, stains and wear distinguish the once-identical white sleeves, turning each mass-produced record into a trace of its owners' lives.

GOLD is at G/F, Remex Centre, 42 Wong Chuk Hang Road. Exhibition hours are noon–6pm, Wednesday–Saturday; check the organiser's website for public-holiday exceptions and special openings.

▍GiGi FM announces debut album Ventus in Anima

GiGi FM has announced her debut album, Ventus in Anima, for 29 January 2027 through her own Sea~rène label. She wrote, produced and performed all nine tracks, with mixing and mastering by Ahmet Altinbas. An official visualiser for advance track "Ascenda" is out.

The Berlin-based artist's album notes centre inherited stories, beliefs and the search for a sense of self, incorporating her own voice, poetic fragments and field recordings. Vocals function both as narration and as material within the compositions; "Ascenda" draws on the myth of Astraea. Digital and double-vinyl editions are available to pre-order. The complete album has not yet been released.

▍Balming Tiger's Wonjin releases debut solo album Mangsangrok

Wonjin, a member of South Korean creative collective Balming Tiger, released his debut solo album, Mangsangrok, on 20 October. He wrote and composed all eleven tracks, with no featured artists, moving from collective work towards his own everyday thoughts and imagined scenarios.

In an interview, Wonjin discusses overthinking, anxiety about things that have not happened and the tendency to magnify small gestures, alongside the responsibility of making a solo record. Advance single "Candy" received a one-take, full-band video directed by fellow Balming Tiger members Jan' Qui and San Yawn. The album also includes "Ice King". Its release credits name Balming Tiger and CAM, under licence to AWAL.

▍Sen Morimoto releases Time Is On Your Side with Chicago collaborators

Sen Morimoto released fourth album Time Is On Your Side on 23 October through Sooper Records, the label they co-run. Morimoto, Brok Mende and Kaina Castillo produced its nine tracks, with live-band collaborators including Ryan Person and Elijah Bradford contributing. Morimoto also mixed the record and drew its cover.

The Kyoto-born, Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist describes a changed relationship with time: some songs emerged from a few improvised takes, while others were left for years before completion. A self-directed film pairs opening tracks "Leave It All Behind" and "Flashback", continuing Morimoto's involvement across the album's music and visual presentation.

▍DJ Nobu and JakoJako exchange originals and remixes on Bitta

DJ Nobu and JakoJako released Wax and Wane / Nodus through Bitta on 23 October. Each contributes one original and remixes the other's work: Nobu's "Wax and Wane" and JakoJako's "Nodus" appear alongside their exchanged versions, making four tracks.

Nobu invited JakoJako to the label he founded, placing their individual practices in direct conversation. JakoJako's work has a close relationship with modular synthesis; in the release notes, Nobu singles out her curiosity about sound itself as a reason for the invitation. The record is available digitally and on 12-inch vinyl.

▍G PLANTS and STUTS sample Tom Misch on "GET GLUE 64BARS"

G PLANTS and STUTS released "GET GLUE 64BARS" on 23 October, following its Red Bull 64 Bars performance film the day before. G PLANTS wrote the lyrics and STUTS composed the music; official interviews and production notes identify the sample as Tom Misch's "The Journey".

G PLANTS describes it as an early collaboration from his renewed solo work, writing the accumulated words as a continuous 64-bar passage. STUTS says the sampling idea began with the rapper's request. The single is released by Rolledman Sacks, alongside the filmed project documenting their collaboration.
